Asha Sing’s first single “Mercy” not only broke the stereotype of Indian artists and bridged the gap between Bollywood and Hollywood but also debuted at the #7 spot on Billboard’s Hot Single Sales Chart. This American-born Desi-raised girl is uniting Eastern and Western cultures through her fusion of Bollywood and American Pop music.
During high school Asha embraced opportunities to refine her talent. She received recognition for her voice when she competed at the world famous Apollo Theater Amateur Talent Competition in Harlem, NY and placed second by taking a daring step and performing Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.” Noise erupted in the local media world as she was then featured in the Miami Herald, Plantation Forum, and the South Asian Times. This win caught the attention of agent Shirley Faison, and Asha was immediately signed with the Carson Adler Casting Agency in New York.
Summer 2010 changed the name of the game when Asha received the opportunity to be a back-up dancer and singer for Shakira at the Premios Juventud 2010 in Miami, FL performing the World Cup song Waka Waka. She recalls, “Being on stage with Shakira and experiencing first-hand how her cultural background influenced her music hit me. I knew after that weekend it was my culture and ethnicity that was going to help me stand apart.” Asha quickly began to formulate her vision of bringing the Bollywood culture to America and gave birth to her fusion of music when she met Grammy winning Producer Paul Ebersold.
The two worked together at Studio Kitchen in Nashville, TN to create four stellar tracks to reflect this vision. The first single “Mercy” was released on August 13, 2013 along with a music video to “Mercy (Daniel Simmons Remix).” To create a collaboration that had an infectious beat, sassy message, and catchy dubstep feel, Asha teamed up with California dance company Bollywood America to create the visual that has now been viewed over 500,000 times - on Vevo.
This multi talented young American with roots in India is now a part of the BMI family along with fellow South Asian Artists A.R Rehman and Jay Sean, as she works to establish herself in the songwriting community. Asha recently was able to exercise her songwriting chops while working with Daddy Yankee to write his single “Lose Control” featuring Emelee. The song was featured on MTV’s show Washington Heights as well as on VH1’s Hit The Floor.
Never slowing down, Asha released her sophomore single "Satellite," an upbeat and thriving summer tune in August, 2014 on PopCrush. Immediately following Asha embarked on her "Be Unique Tour" during the 2014-2015 school calendar year where she travelled to South Florida elementary, middle and high schools sharing her story and inspiring young minds to go after their dreams. Closing out 2014 with a bang, Asha performed at the Y100 Jingle Ball alongside Jake Miller, Meghan Trainor, Rixton and more.
Need a pick -me-up this #HumpDay? Listen to this beautiful mash-up of Paul McCartney’s “Only One” and Rihanna/Kanye West’s “Four Five Seconds,” by former Brown Girl of the Month Asha Sing and her best friend Joni Fatora. Those of us who have been following Sing along her journey as an “American-born Desi-raised” pop star are well aware that her voice stands out powerfully against Western backgrounds. However, this mash-up really highlights her crisp clean vocals harmonizing with Joni and her acoustic guitar in the background. Read More Here

Asha Sing has a head for business — and a voice for radio.
The Indian-American singer, who started out in the choir while in high school at Westminster Academy, will be showing off her musical chops at the preshow Sunday for Y100’s Jingle Ball Village at the BB& T Center in Sunrise.
Later performances include fellow locals Ariana Grande, Jason Derulo and Jake Miller along with pop heavyweights Calvin Harris, Pharrell, Iggy Azalea, Meghan Trainor, Charli XCX, Jessie J, Becky G, Shawn Mendes and Nick Jonas.
Nervous? Not in the least. Asha Sing has got this, even though Jingle Ball is no doubt her biggest gig thus far.
Through talent, contacts and sheer perseverance, she was offered an album contract in her senior year of high school, but Asha went the nontraditional route for entertainers: She decided to pursue her studies, accepting a full scholarship at University of Miami’s Frost School of Music.
“Doing their music-business program was probably the best decision I could make for myself personally because I didn’t know the kind of artist I wanted to be,” said Asha, who graduated last year. “Those years shaped who I am.”
Also helping in the inspiration department was one of the world’s most famous crossover entertainers.
In the summer of 2010, a friend called saying backup singers were needed for the Premios Juventud Awards at the BankUnited Center.
“All I needed to hear was ‘paid gig’ as a broke college student,” said Asha, laughing. “We were told to learn the lyrics and dance to Waka Waka but didn’t know we’d actually be performing with Shakira until the day before the event.”
“I remember before singing [Gitana] she came down floating to the stage on a kind of magic carpet then did this belly dance routine. It was so Aladdin. Here she was this gorgeous, sexy singer and at that moment her culture defined her. Then it hit me, ‘Oh my gosh. This is what I want to do — I want to incorporate my Indian background into my artistry and really expand from that.’”

BSCkids recently got the chance to chat with Indian/American pop singer/songwriter Asha Sing! The talented singer spoke with us about her music, culture, and newest singles.
Sing was offered a record deal at age 16 but instead turned it down to attend the University of Miami Frost School of Music to better understand the music business. Straight out of college, Sing landed her first gig as a backup dancer/singer for superstar Shakira. Sing later released her first single “Mercy” which claimed No. 7 on Billboard’s Hot Hits Chart last year. This fall, Sing released her music video for her single, “Satellite” and has been visiting schools up and down the South Florida coast on her Be Unique Tour.
BSCKids: Asha Sing
Considering you were offered a record deal at 16, how long have you been singing?
My entire life. I grew up singing in church and in front of family members and it kind of expanded from there.
Growing up, who did you listen to and love?
I absolutely adored Celine Dion. I always had her albums on her repeat. I also listened to a lot of different Christian artists growing up.
Asha Sing is an Indian/American pop singer. At the age of 16, she was offered a record deal. For any teenager, this opportunity would be a no brainer and would seize the chance. However to focus on her education to attend the University of Miami Frost School of Music, Asha’s decision was to turn down the offer. This was done in order to gain a better understanding of the industry as we all know the music industry is not the same as it was back then.
After college, Asha landed her first performance in the summer of 2010 as a backup dancer/singer for Shakira at the Premios Juventud in Miami, FL performing the World Cup song “Waka Waka”. This opportunity was the steeping stone needed to pave her was as a musician herself. Sing later released her first single “Mercy” which claimed No. 7 on Billboard’s Hot Hits Chart last year.
With releasing her music video for “Satellite”, Sing has visited a number of schools up and down the South Florida coast to inform students of her story of choosing an education first and how she set out to break the barrier between Indian and American pop music, blending them together and ridding it of stereotypes.
When most artists receive an offer for a record deal, they don’t think twice about jumping at it. Asha Sing, on the other hand, did everything she could to perfect her art beforehand.
At just 16-years-old, Indian/American artist Asha Sing turned down a record deal to attend the University of Miami Frost School of Music to learn everything she could to stand out as a singer & songwriter. After graduation, Asha continued her career as a backup dancer/singer for Shakira.

Hello, all! Let's keep this experience sharing going, shall we? In case you're wondering what this feature is for, here's a brief explanation of what I'm after: The College Experience is my way of discussing the pros and cons of taking steps to have a career while still being a student, or how the desire to be involved with the music industry could interfere with the pursuit of a degree. I'll be asking a selection of folks the same basic questions regarding their school, their role in the industry, their struggles, and their goals. I'll also ask about each person's individual projects, whether they are photographers, musicians, aspiring publicists, writers, promoters, and the like. I think it'll be interesting to see how each of us deals with the difficulties of balancing and prioritizing the various obstacles we face as students with big ambitions.
I love writing about music, especially unique artists who have incredible stories. Asha Sing started her entire career in such a whirlwind manner by doing back-up for none other than Shakira, but she decided to get her Bachelor’s degree to strengthen her career. Her story stood out to me, because plenty of artists do their education online, or steadily pursue a degree throughout their music career, but at such a young age to make that decision is pretty incredible. She had offers in music as young as high school, but she focused on her future. Not only was she able to take time to learn more about her chosen career, but she also made connections that helped her sprouting life as a musician.
In addition to Asha’s decisions involving school, she has a strong sense of staying true to herself. She doesn’t want to model herself off of someone, but rather show the world what she has to offer. Her lyrics are written based on her own experiences, which strengthens the relationship between the audience and herself. While researching her music, I discovered some covers that she had created for her YouTube page (linked below), and it was fantastic to listen and not have it directly parallel the original. When an artist can take a smash song and completely create something original, it shows their creativity and talent at their finest.
Asha’s first single, “Mercy,” claimed the No. 7 spot on Billboard’s Hot Hits Chart, and she’s recently released another single called “Satellite.” Both of them have such an upbeat, pop vibe, but with a strong voice to go along with it. Her songs could fit in with some of the dancey numbers on Top 40 charts today, which gives this girl so much potential for growth and personal inspiration. I was able to ask Asha a few questions regarding her career and her goals, as well as get a look into Asha as an individual:
1) First and foremost, what made you want to pursue music?
I grew up in a very musical family. Everyone works in the medical field but I just didn’t see myself pursuing that path growing up....
Asha Sing is a Miami-based, Indo-American artist who set up a digital entertainment company called Culture Machine. She talks to Yamini Walia about her musical journey so far
After taking part in several competitions as a teenager, Asha Sing was finally discovered by Grammy-winning producer, Paul Ebersold. She became the first Indo-American artist to debut at #7 on the Billboard chart, when she was just 22-years-old, with her single, Mercy. Today, she’s part of the music label BMI, which includes artists such as A.R.Rahman and Jay Sean. Read on as she tells us about what keeps her going.
Were you always inclined towards music?
I grew up in a musical family. Almost everyone in my family sings or plays an instrument, and at family gatherings, the children were always pushed to perform for the aunts and uncles. I always learnt of having a career in music, but I didn’t know how to translate those thoughts into reality....
After a hit first single, Indo American pop artist Asha Sing brings out her second track
A year ago when at 22 pop artist Asha Sing's single Mercy became the first single by an Indo American to be listed on the prestigious Billboard Hot Singles Chart at #7. Almost a year she has released her second track called Satellite, this singer who can burp on command (for real) was born in New York has mixed Indian roots (father is from Hyderabad and mother from Kerala ) and has had a passion to sing from a young age. Sing with her music wants to create a unique fusion that helps bring closer the music and musicians of the east and west.
Excerpts from the interview.
Can you tell us the story behind you working with Grammy winning producer Paul Ebersold?
I was actually in college interning at EMI Christian Music Group Publishing in Nashville, TN. Word got around the office that I wanted to be a "Bollywood Pop Artist." I didn't really know what else to call my artistry at that point. The President of the company, Eddie Degarmo, called me into his office and asked me plainly what Bollywood was. I began to explain the Indian entertainment industry and my vision for my music, he asked me to sing for him on the spot and I guessed I impressed him enough because the next day he brought in a Grammy winning producer for me to meet. Paul and I hit it off right away and our creativity took flight later that year.
Get on your sunglasses and break out the bathing suit because summer is back!

Today, HitFix exclusively premieres the vid from the Miami-based artist, below. Again, Sing actively incorporates her Desi roots with a handful of Holi powder around her pool party.
"Satellite was really fun for me to make because it was the first time I got to take more of a directors role. We specifically created a story where I got to show my personality and more of my acting chops," Sing said. "The best part was that a lot of my best friends and family were in the video. We were cracking up the entire shoot trying to finish."
Asha Sing is an Indian Pop singer songwriter, who began her career in music as Shakira’s back-up singer/dancer. However, once shed attended the University of Miami to complete her Bachelors that makes this starlet stand out. Blending elements of her cultural background, Asha Sing has created something unique!
For the record, please state your name:
Why did you start creating music?
It’s in my blood. Everyone in my family is musically inclined, growing up I thought it was normal to sing songs together at every family gathering because that’s just what we did.
What musicians inspired you to start making music?
First my dad. He plays piano by ear and his influence was very strong early in my life. I grew up listening to a lot of Christian music so Rachel Lampa was also an early influence. Once I entered high school I started to listen to more TOP 40 commercial radio. John Legend and One Republic soon became my obsessions. I was very attracted to their song writing styles.

“From a very young age, I have always remembered myself to be obsessed with music and singing. I would sing everything as a child. I mean everything. ‘Oops, I just dropped my pencil, and now I need to go pee pee’ – picture that in my five-year-old operatic voice. Looking back now, that must have been really annoying for my parents, but instead of telling me to stop singing, they enrolled me in violin lessons at the age of three, then piano and private training for voice.
